Be Filled With the Spirit

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”

Suggested reading – John 14:12-17

Every Christian has the opportunity to be a witness for our Lord. We have so many commands throughout the Bible, such as we find in Isaiah 43:10, “Ye are my witnesses saith the Lord.” And also we read in Mark 16:15, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” We cannot carry out this command alone.

We need help. And Jesus promised that help for all Christians in the person and power of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8, But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

We can acquire the Holy Spirit’s power by the following:

  • Empty our vessel of sin, II Timothy 2:20 , self desire to please ourselves, Philippians 3:7, and accomplishments to be seen of others, II Timothy 2:21, through acknowledgement and confession to God. Psalm 51:3,4
  • Pray and ask the Lord to fill you with Holy Spirit power, Acts 4:31. Claim the Holy Spirit’s power for your witness to a lost world and He will give you fearless confidence, II Timonthy 1:7, provide you with boldness to speak the Word, Acts 4:31b and you will not be ashamed to bear a witness for Him, II Timothy 1:8

How Do We Respond to God’s Word?

“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

When we hear the word of God taught or we read it, just how do we respond to every word from the Lord: Do we allow its penetrating power to grip us and cause us to respond in such a way that we make decisions according to His will, or do we just let it go by without responding correctly?

Here is how we respond correctly to God’s Word:

Let us respond openly.

  • Have your heart open to the teaching His every word. Psalm 119:33
  • Be open to the power of the Word and allow it to cleanse you.  Psalm 119:9,11
  • Be open to the work of the Holy Spirit through the Word.  John 16:13-15

Let us respond humbly.

  • We are to humble ourselves.  James 4:10
  • We are to obey and follow His words.  Psalm 119:32,33

Let us respond positively

  • Have a steady diet of God’s Word in you.  Joshua 1:8
  • Apply its principles to everyday living Psalm 114:112
  • Share it with others and never be ashamed.  Psalm 119:46
